Virtualization for Middleware

Today, CIO's and organizations are faced with declining budgets and increased demand for operational efficiencies and cost savings. Over time, organizational growth and systems assimilation have created duplicate data centers that are providing similar services. They contain disparate hardware, operating systems, application and systems technologies. They've been implemented as stand-alone systems that have no economies of scale.

Virtualization for servers has provided many cost savings in recent years. Most cost savings are attributed to licensing, cost efficiency, reduced complexity, and standardized environments. In addition, some organizations are reducing power and cooling, physical environment space, and improving server workload utilization.

According to IDC, more than three-quarters of companies with 500 or more employees use virtual servers, and 45 percent of all new servers purchased this year will be virtualized.

Although these improvements have occurred, most organizations still are in their infancy with virtualization and are merely moving servers from physical to virtual. (figure 1)

Provisioning JBoss on RHEV

Why use RHEV to provision JBoss?

  • Create core templates of JBoss distributions (e.g. operating system, JBoss version, configuration, etc.)
  • Establish standard baseline configurations for Online Transaction Processing (OLTP), Online Analytical Processing (OLAP), and Message-based deployments
  • Provide “out of the box” performance with predefined clustered and highly available designs
  • Simplify maintenance and versioning
  • Full Life-Cycle Software Development

A virtualized JBoss environment under RHEV is efficient, effective, and scalable. The design focuses on maintainability while yielding highly available systems, supporting continuous upgrade, and codify resource skill sets. RHEV provides for the automatic configuration and reconfiguration of systems based on templates. It allows your systems operations staff to manage baseline configurations vs. deployed servers.
